In cooperation with the Austrian Institute of Technology, LISI was designed as an EnergyPlus building to cover the entire energy demand of the house – in California as well as in Austria. For this purpose, an 8.6 kW array at a 10° southwards inclination transforms radiative energy from the sun into electricity to power the house or feed excess energy into the grid. Two sub-systems are installed on LISI’s roof for further scientific evaluation. One string consists of Kioto modules and is connected to a Fronius inverter. LotusG2 modules with integrated DC-DC converters by Holleis make up the second string. All PV panels are mounted to the prefabricated iFIX supporting rack by voestalpine – simply and quickly. (Solar) Power to LISI!

20 beds, 2 bath rooms, 1 kitchen and a colorful mix of residents: that is the LISI shared apartment. For the last couple of months, up to 20 students settled in an alpine residential building, and have since been living and working around the clock on one common goal – finish the LISI house, disassemble it properly and carefully package its parts. Sadly, the time on the construction site here in Austria is drawing to a close, meaning we also have to bid farewell to the LISI chalet. Yet, we are confident that we can soon, at the very latest during the competition in California, continue to cook, eat breakfast and brush our teeth together.

LISI – The House of Team Austria is currently being built at the beautiful Carinthian lake Weissensee with the help of our principal partner Weissenseer, the highest placed swimming lake of Europe (3050 feet). This video teaser throws its spotlight on several steps of the prefabriaction process. Like nowhere else, it show the symbiotic workforce and collaboration of humans and machines on a construction site. Have a look!   Video by Peter Bessler, Dietmar Hatzenbichler, Wolfgang Hüller. Once the transport containers are on site, you know things are getting serious and that the house will soon be on its way to the States. Six beautiful 40 foot international open-top freight containers arrived from Cargo-Partner in Carinthia the other day. When sitting next to each other, six containers might seem like a lot of space to store LISI, yet we have Decathletes working day and night to fit all the modules and components into the containers; on paper that is. A computer generated 3D model was built to simulate loading and unloading. To guarantee a smooth construction period, it is crucial to unload each component seamlessly and in the right order. Some have even compared it to Tetris yet it is so much more than just that. Even though one full container may weigh (and is capable of) over 20 tons, trucks are not allowed to exceed 15 due to road regulations. The date of departure, at least for LISI, is drawing near and final arrangements are being made to fit her comfortably inside her temporary transport home. After all, the journey takes no less than 2 months.

This week, two large construction sites merged. After being prefabricated for several weeks at Wohncontact, a carpente’s workshop in Ebreichsdorf, our Kitchen took a little journey and moved to Weissensee. A small group of decathletes as well as two carpenters installed the entire kitchen including our unique zero-emission refrigerator, sink and dishwasher. Last but not least, we installed and adjusted the kitchen fronts by Team7 – perhaps one of the most accurate jobs on site. Nevertheless: the kitchen is ready and we have begun filling the cabinets with plates.

Team Austria had the unique chance to test LISI’s HVAC system at the Austrian Institute of Technology in two climate chambers. For this purpose, a life-size model of the services room was built, housing all of LISI’s technical components: an air-source heat pump for heating and cooling and a heat pump for domestic hot water from CLEENSolair as well as an energy recovery ventilator from Hoval.
Having the flexibility of testing at any indoor and outdoor weather conditions, we chose to investigate the performance of our system for typical and extreme days in Irvine and Vienna. We were true weather gods in that respect. We concluded two successful weeks of testing in the climate chambers by inviting the entire team and sponsors to take a tour and get to know the technical heart of LISI followed by a Barbecue on the roof of AIT.

The façade is literally the face of a house. For that very reason, we are happy to finally be standing in front of LISI’s face. Freshly brushed and painted, a handful of Decathletes installed the façade panels of REMA last week. The company Frischeis sponsored with a matching color contrast: thermal ash covering the core, as well as the terrace floor. In just a few days, a part of our thermo ash stock was processed into fragrant plates for the core interior. When students are not sniffing on the wooden slats, they assemble terrace floors with approximately 21,000 screws. Now LISI is not only unique due to her intrinsic values, but also a very special tactile, olfactory and visual experience on the outside.

Safety and proper behavior is important in all areas of life – on a construction site it is essential. Therefore, Team LISI met at the weekend to learn the most important rules of conduct and safety measures in and around the building, both during construction and competition times.
Yet real teamwork affects not only safety – the organization is an essential element in the success of LISI. In the past two years, the team has grown considerably. Coordination and communication between the different disciplines gain importance the more people are getting involved in LISI. In addition to safety training and fire protection, the weekend was also invested to investigate the structure of the smaller teams. We analyzed which things work and what still carries potential for improvement. Subsequently, our strengths were emphasized not only to encourage team spirit but also to underline it as a key point in a project like the Solar Decathlon.

Whether it is a public event or a whole week on the construction site – thanks to our sponsors, Team LISI is perfectly equipped for every occasion when it comes to clothing. This season, the decathletes from Austria are wearing shirts and blouses in black or white with the LISI logo on their chest.
Imma Baumgartner’s custom-made outfits for the competition time, when we’re welcoming both jury and visitors, will fit like a glove. However, our ladies and gentlemen are not only dressed well in chic and representative fashion. Steel-toe shoes by Elton, helmets and goggles from 3M and work pants sponsored by Reindl are a couple of accessories providing not only the necessary security, but are also an eye catcher.
For the times between working hard on site and a public press night, our generic T-shirt with the LISI logo by AustriaShirt is obviously a standard outfit.

In Austria, wood has been used as an elementary construction material for a long time. This video gives you insight on where the prefabrication starts, as well as a glimpse of the Austrian countryside. In a clear statement towards sustainable innovation, every part of the tree is used in LISI. For example the chipping will become the inner facade of the core.

Building a house requires careful planning, adequate funding and a trained building team. Even though efforts at the construction site have had enough physical training, we can observe a trend to various sporting activities in recent weeks. People are running and biking – quite often the entire distance from our accommodation to the construction site – 20 kilometers, 250 meters in altitude difference.
The team went so far that some decathletes wanted to show off their newly collected condition at the Austrian Women’s Run. Despite a relatively short training period, Team LISI also took part in the competition and made a good impression. All the ladies crossed the finish line well intact and healthy, yet exhausted. With the medal around their necks, kilometers in their calves and the fighting spirit in their minds, LISI will continue strong.
