Verbatim Script

The scene consists of an architect, an engineer and a builder.

Architect speaks

To compete in the Solar Decathlon 2013 Team Austria developed the LISI house: a compact, sustainable interpretation of the atrium typology for one or two individuals, adaptable for a range of climate zones. The residential heart is a spacious, transformable living area that accommodates a variety of lifestyle activities, such as cooking, dining, socializing, entertaining and relaxing. Large sliding doors open to the partially enclosed patios, expanding the central living area both to the north and the south. Adjacent to the cooking area, the patio herb garden draws its water supply from the roof reservoir. The structural core of LISI contains the bathroom and a bedroom that can be alternately used as a home office. The core also extends to pergolas flanking the patios at either end. Changeable architectural layers create a variety of sensory conditions. LISI can close up into a protective cocoon for its occupants, or open up to express their place in the neighborhood.

Engineer speaks

We set out to engineer LISI as a home environment that generates more energy than it consumes. In other words, it’s an “energy+” system. Photovoltaic modules cover the roof for grid-connected power generation, with a smart load management system to optimally balance the energy flows in day-to-day operation. Beyond heating and cooling, these include energy for warm water, home appliances, and mobility. The utility room in LISI’s structural core houses all of the automated mechanical systems. Here we have the PV monitor, system bus, and switchboard, as well as the compact ventilation unit, plumbing controls and hot water supply, charged by an array of thermal collectors. To avoid overheating on hot, sunny days, effective shading is provided by automated screen and awning systems. The R&D process also involved optimizing the building in terms of overall resource consumption.

Builder speaks

Our little LISI is built mostly of wood-based materials. All the construction components are shipped here in just six standard freight containers. Since we’re dealing with fully pre-fabricated units, we can handle the entire component assembly on-site with a single mobile crane and a solid construction crew. Disassembly and reassembly are just as clear-cut and simple to get done. Once LISI’s done her job here in California and wherever else she’s headed, we can easily break all of her components down for clean recycling and material re-use.

Architect speaks

We developed LISI mindful of the issues we collectively face for a sustainable future as individuals and as societies inhabiting this planet. The LISI house is a social animal, eager to find its own place in a closely spaced, yet richly diverse community – with a sense of stewardship in using our most precious resources.

The company Wolfin was kind enough to teach two LISI Decathletes the fine art of insulating a roof in one of their workshops. Whether we’ll be using a heat gun or solvent welding, LISI is sure to be protected from any kind of water now. However, we are not hoping for rain just to prove a point – after all, LISI is a solar house.

Founded in 2010 by Governor Schwarzenegger in cooperation with the United Nations, the R20 Regions of Climate Action is a non-profit organization focused on promoting economical and environmental benefits on a subnational level. On january 31st and february 1st the R20 Conference was held in Vienna and LISI was there!

We were lucky to be among a very select 200 students invited to watch a live podium discussion between Governor Schwarzenegger, Mr. Yumkella, Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and Mag. Karlheinz Toechterle, Austrian Minister of Science and Research, highlighting some of the environmental issues facing us today as well as some of the successful measures which have been taken so far. Excited and eager to learn more, we headed to the Austrian House of Science the next morning for an entire day of key-note speeches and expert panels. As we listened to CEOs, politicians and professors from all over the world presenting hard facts, exciting projects and innovative new technology we could not help but feel that we are on the right track of making our contribution to a better tomorrow with the LISI house. After the closing ceremony we had the chance of speaking to Daniel M. Kammen, Distinguished Professor of the University of Berkeley and Director of the Renewable & Appropriate Energy Laboratory, who expressed his enthusiasm about the Solar Decathlon and commended us on our participation. To round of the day we enjoyed an excellent lunch buffet and test drove some electric cars.

Ultimately the R20 Conference left us inspired and fired up to pursue our high goals for LISI.

During January’s workshop in Irvine, a couple of members of Team LISI took a closer look at the construction site on the air field. They also used their time to scout for various companies willing to support LISI on her way from Austria to California as well as during the competition. An important question on our ToDo list was the accommodation for the team. Luckily, we found a suiting location to sleep and cook during our time in the States.

The team has now reached a point where we have a pretty good idea of how the modules and individual components are being assembled and disassembled. Now we have to think of how we will package the house into containers and more importantly which steps to take when the containers arrive at the site. Here too, members have been busy finding professionals who want to help out LISI in this matter. This ranges from freight companies to crane rentals including forklift firms.

When it comes to plant nurseries, we have held talks with two shops in the vicinity of the airfield. It was important to use the visit in California to give the plant nursery enough time to cultivate and grow our desired plants in order to have them ready for the competition in September.

It is very nice to see the ambition people outside of the team have when we present them with LISI. There certainly are many friends and supporters out there; we just have to find them.

With a bit of jet lag and a lot of excitement, 7 students and faculty from the Vienna University of Technology in Austria arrived early January in sunny Orange County California to participate in the design workshop for the support decathlon 2013. Team Austria proudly presented LISI, our plus energy home with a configurable curtain wall and courtyard. We especially enjoyed the project “speed dating” style workshop, where 9 competition organizers in disciplines from media outreach to construction and safety, sat down to answer questions and give tips on our current design and plans. Having to ship our house from Austria to California means getting things right the first time! Team Austria also got a head start in making new friends with the 19 other teams from the US, Canada, and of course our neighbors in the Czech team, the other invited team from outside north America. With designs in hand, It’s time to start building our home. See you again in Irvine California this coming October!

Solar Decathlon 2013: VUT qualifies – Energy-self-sufficient house L.I.S.I. in the competition for sustainable building in California.

The “Solar Decathlon” is an international university competition to advance solar building technologies, hosted by the US Department of Energie. The team headed by the Vienna University of Technology was selected as one of just two European projects to compete in the upcoming event. “Team Austria” developed the high-tech, “energy+” house L.I.S.I., which will be displayed in October 2013 in California. The project we be formally presented on Friday, November 16 2012, at 9:30 in the ceremonial hall of VUT.

Project details: www.solardecathlon.at

The Solar Decathlon is the most challenging university competition in the field of sustainable building worldwide. It has showcased future living concepts since its inception as a biennial event in 2002. From 130 entries submitted by university and college teams from around the world in 2011, 20 projects were selected to present their vision by competing in the next Solar Decathlon 2013. The Vienna University of Technology’s Team Austria entry – the L.I.S.I. house concept (Living Inspired by Sustainable Innovation) — made the running as one of just 2 European teams to qualify in this round. LISI’s textile outer façade shell adapts to the needs of its occupants and actively supports meeting all the technological demands of a high-tech, net-positive-energy home.

Architects of tomorrow develop ideas today

As the project leader for Team Austria, Karin Stieldorf (Workgroup Sustainable Building at VUT), maintains, “the Solar Decathlon is an ideal opportunity to demonstrate Austria’s innovative potential in meeting the biggest technological challenges of our time.” The development of the atrium house prototype dubbed “LISI” was driven by the globally rising need for compact, affordable, and energy  efficient housing in urban-peripheral environments. She adds that, “Over the course of three semesters, Team Austria student teams designed and developed a variety of concepts addressing a range of issues, for instance, regarding floor plan layout, interior design, and façade systems… The best ideas were integrated into the competition project after extensive consultation with experts, that is, structural engineers, energy consultants, and system manufacturers.”

High-tech for the needs of today and tomorrow

LISI’s integrated flexibilty allows the core energy management strategy to be effective in any climate zone with minimal adaptations. Active solar modules are integrated in the building envelope’s construction, in addition to the development of complex heating and cooling system controls to optimize the interworking of active and passive energy flows. Through audiovisually enhanced scenarios, an interactive user manual explains how to optimize the house’s time-dependent power usage under variable conditions. The wood-based cladding system was co-developed with graduate students from the University of Applied Sciences Kuchl in Salzburg.

Solar Decathlon

What’s special about the Solar Decathlon with regard to building practice: The prototypes are built full-scale and opened to the general public for 10 days of everyday-duty assessment. As in the Olympic decathlon, the competitors are evaluated in 10 contests. The overall winning project has to prove itself in such terms as architectural design quality, optimal energy efficiency, and economic affordability. Competitive house prototypes must operate solely on self-produced energy sources to cover the demand for heating, cooling, warm water, and home appliances.

Continued education and public awareness

The goals of the Solar Decathlon are wide-ranging: educate students in the field of renewable energy and sustainable building, raise public awareness about the potentials of zero-emission housing, as well as promote new technologies for solar energy production.

Building the future together

To translate our vision into reality, Team Austria is actively seeking potential partners and sponsors who share a convincing passion for solutions that create a better – more authentic, ethical, compelling, excellent – future.

The L.I.S.I. house is being developed in cooperation with the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), as well as the Universities of Applied Sciences in St. Pölten and Kuchl. Project partners include IG Passivhaus, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Innovation and Technology (bm:vit) and the Embassy in Washington/DC, as well as the Austrian National Research Fund (Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft).

On December 5th, students from the University of Applied Sciences in Salzburg met with students from Vienna University of Technology to discuss the interior concepts for the LISI home. Using crepe tape, a 1:1 floor plan was constructed to get a sense of interior dimensions and allow students to walk through the LISI house. We discussed different sections of the building including the wardrobe, kitchen and dining area, sleeping unit, and wet cell. New concepts and prototypes of an unconventional refrigerator as well as the location of a TV for optimal viewing from every angle were also presented.
