The plants have arrived. The eighth day of our assembly is dominated by the color green. 365 plants from the AKI nursery made it onto the building site and – with a painstaking attention – were placed in the appropriate flower boxes. Furthermore, the green walls in the north and south were stocked with herbs and plants. However, the construction site was not standing still. The wooden “haptic-path” which will give LISI’s visitors an overview of the types of wood used in the house, was mounted, the remaining surfaces were fixed and installations verified with a final check. Another shift until 2:00 am comes to an end. We are almost done. Only five more working hours until we reach the deadline.

The LISI building site is alive. Small groups of Austrian decathletes are hustling. No matter where you look, you’ll find someone working at every nook and corner – surfaces are being fixed, lighting mounted and floor modules installed. It almost seems as if everything is happening at once, and that is quite possibly the case.

Dear Construction Diary,

Today – on one of the hottest days of the construction period – we installed the decking of the terrace. To many students’ surprise, that task was accomplished faster than expected. Luckily, the organizers brought lots of water bottles to prevent dehydration of the team. Later that day, the film team droped in once again and held a couple of interviews with our decathletes. Check out the construction videos for more information.

You might think that on day 5 of assembly, we are starting to slide into a boring routine – think again! The construction site is as busy as ever. Final adjustments were made to the cornice and even more shipping containers were unloaded once again. A small team of eight decathletes placed six sliding windows in their intended positions, while a chain of ten people figuratively threw insulation modules onto the roof to be placed there. One could even go so far as to say LISI put on her wool hat within minutes.
The team effort was outstanding today. As the crane shut down its engines and fellow Solar Decathlon teams started to leave their sites towards the end of the day, the film crew arrived at the house to do a series of casual interviews. Finally a day that does not end too abruptly and leaves you dreaming of safety vests and power drills.

Spending several days in a row on a construction site, each with twelve hour work shifts, is certainly going to burn some calories. Team Austria however, comes prepared with a designated cooking team, dedicated to filling everyone’s stomachs. Using shifts, everybody will get a chance to cook for 45 people during the 30 days.
Months in advance, we sat together and brainstormed a menu that covers at least 24 days – a menu that will include nutritional, affordable and delicious food. The mornings start with lunch preparations and occasional shopping at wholesales. After having brought the meal to the other team members, we usually get right back in the kitchen to prepare a two-course dinner or do more grocery shopping for the upcoming days. Needless to say, the food supply for a team this size requires careful planning and a tight schedule.

Today, we placed the cornice elements in their position. They form the basic structure and the framing of the patios and LISI’s semi-public areas. Furthermore, we installed a professional fall protection – praised by our Safety Inspector several times. It makes any work on the roof a lot easier.

Every good house has a roof. Solar Decathlon Team Austria has also heard of this wisdom – which is why LISI received her “headgear” today. Four ceiling modules make up the roof – crowned by sparkling photovoltaic modules. Deep into the night, the crane placed one module at a time. Finally, at 1:00 am the core structure is complete.

It’s the nitty-gritty. Today, the floor modules are placed on the foundation – a task that requires a lot of precision. Only a few millimeters difference could have unpleasant consequences on the structure at a later point. However, so far everything looks good and we are working with a positive prognosis. During the next step, LISI’s two service cores are installed. From now on, the kitchen and service room are located on their predetermined position. The technical team can come in and breathe life into LISI.

After a not only felt but actually short night, the competition began on Monday. At 6:15am, 19 teams stormed the competition area and threw themselves onto their construction sites. Team Austria also set up their site and piloted a mobile crane in place. Shortly after, the first LISI container rolled onto our lot.
The first day went according to our schedule; the ground anchors were drilled and set. Today – on the second day – we can continue placing the floor modules in the morning and the two cores in the afternoon. The atmosphere amongst the team is great and we continue to look forward to an exciting development phase.

More than 24 hours on the road. After a full day trip from Vienna to Irvine, all of Team Austria’s decathletes have arrived safely on time in California. Having successfully completed the registration process and taken a short sightseeing tour of Orange County Great Park, we met our competitors in a first all-team meeting – yet only briefly – since in just a few hours the first container will arrive at the construction site. We have just nine days available to build the LISI house – everything from the foundation all the way to the bed sheets must be completed. The contest begins now.
